State Senator Harriette L. Chandler serves the people of Worcester, Boylston, Holden, Princeton, and West Boylston, Clinton and Northborough. The first Worcester woman ever elected to serve in the Massachusetts Senate, Harriette is a strong advocate for health care reform, education, veterans’ issues, housing, and civil rights. Her extraordinary energy, dedication and experience have paid dividends for the communities in her district. She was also a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1995-2001 where she Chaired the Joint Committee on Health Care. Prior to serving in the Massachusetts legislature, she was a member of the Worcester school committee from 1991 to 1994.
A POWERFUL LEADER IN THE STATE SENATE
Through hard work and persistence, Harriette Chandler has become a leader to ensure that the concerns of Central Massachusetts communities are heard at the State House. Harriette is the current Senate Assistant Majority Leader and the Vice-Chair of the Senate Steering and Policy Committee.She is the second woman to serve as the Senate Assistant Majority Leader in Massachusetts' history. Harriette previously served as the Senate Majority Whip, Assistant Majority Whip, Vice-Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Health, Assistant Vice-Chair of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means, Vice-Chair of the Joint Committee on Federal Stimulus Oversight, and the Vice-Chair of the Joint Committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs. She also serves as the Co-Chair of the Prevention for Health Caucus, Co-Chair of the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) Legislative Caucus, Co-Chair of the Central Massachusetts Caucus, Co-Chair of the Oral Health Caucus, and formerly served as the Co-Chair of the Brain Injury Commission and Co-Chair of the Caucus of Women Legislators.
A CONCERNED CITIZEN AND DEDICATED VOLUNTEER
In addition to sponsoring local youth sports teams and supporting many local charitable efforts in her district's communities, Harriette serves on local boards, including theMayor's Advisory Committee on At-Risk Youth, Worcester Women’s History Project,Worcester Art Museum, United Way of Central Massachusetts, Worcester Economic Development Council, Worcester Democratic City Committee and the Massachusetts Democratic State Committee.
EDUCATION & FAMILY
Senator Chandler earned degrees from Wellesley College (B.A.), Simmons College (M.B.A.), and Clark University (Ph.D.). Worcester State College, Honorary Doctorate Public Administration. She is married to Worcester attorney Burton Chandler and has three adult children and four grandchildren.
